AUSTRALIA DAY 2010 - 26 January 2010
The Consulate General welcomed the start of our national holiday with the inaugural Australia Day breakfast address attended by over 50 Australians and Americans. This year’s guest speaker was author, Li Cunxin, who shared his inspiring story of being born into poverty during Mao’s communist China and selected to train at Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy. Mr Li spoke of how he was then chosen as one of the first two cultural exchange students to be allowed to study in the United States, performing with the Houston Ballet for 16 years and then went on to become a principal dancer with the Australian Ballet. Mr Li’s remarkable story has been made into a best-selling autobiography and adapted into a film, Mao’s Last Dancer. More

On the 18th of January, the Consulate General launched the recently developed New York Young Leaders Program, an initiative which brings together the next generation of leaders to discuss some of the most important global issues. More

My wife Julie and I, in the company of our children, are honoured to represent Australia at the Consulate General in New York, the first Australian diplomatic posting created outside the British Empire in October 1918.
Since April it has continued to be a productive period with visits by the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Treasurer, Foreign Minister, Trade Minister, Financial Services Minister and an historic visit from our Navy. We have come to appreciate more than ever the exceptional talent and expertise that Australians bring to the United States in so many walks of life. More

Launch of Australian American Leadership Conversations
A recent initiative of the Australian Consulate General in New York has been the Australian American Leadership Conversations (AALC). These talks began in April of this year, and were conceived in the spirit of Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s determination to talk about the future of Australia, and by extension, the world. These insightful discussions have featured wide ranging topics addressed by leaders in their fields, with the aim of fostering discussion on matters of public interest. More

Blanchett Impresses New York Audience
Australia’s theatrical talent was on proud display as the Sydney Theatre Company performed to a New York audience, with Academy Award winning actress Cate Blanchett playing a starring role. The Sydney Theatre Company returned to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) with a special winter presentation of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by renowned actor, director and writer Liv Ullmann. The show also featured, Joel Edgerton as Stanley Kowalski, Robin McLeavey as Stella Kowalski and Tim Richards as Mitch, alongside Blanchett, who played Blanche DuBois. The production marked Liv Ullmann’s U.S. directorial debut and Blanchett’s second BAM engagement—following her acclaimed performance in Sydney Theatre Company’s Hedda Gabler (2006 Spring Season). A Streetcar Named Desire premiered at Sydney Theatre, where it enjoyed a sold-out run from September 1–October 17, 2009. More

New York Welcomes HMAS Ships Sydney and Ballarat
The Australian Consulate General and the Mission to the United Nations in New York welcomed the arrival of the HMAS Sydney and HMAS Ballarat last summer. The ships caught the attention of many New Yorkers as they arrived mid-morning on July 19 before a glorious Manhattan skyline. Their arrival signalled the beginning of a series of events, as the ships’ 400 sailors enjoyed four days in the city. For many of these sailors, this visit was their first to New York, and they provided a welcome and regular sight across the city as they explored some of New York’s exciting attractions. More
