The Hon. John Olsen was Australian Consul-General in Los Angeles from 2002 to 2006.

Mr Olsen was Premier of South Australia, Minister for State Development and Minister for Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs from November 1996 to October 2001 and was South Australia’s Minister for Infrastructure from 1993 to 1996. From 1990 to 1992, Mr Olsen was appointed to the Federal Senate. Prior to that, Mr Olsen was Leader of the Opposition in South Australia from 1982 to 1990 and Chief Secretary and Minister for Police, Correctional Services and Fisheries from 1979 to 1982. He joined the South Australian Parliament in 1979, was the President of the South Australian Liberal Party from 1976 – 1979 and was awarded the US Bicentennial Fellowship in 1976. Mr Olsen was the Mayor of Kadina from 1974 – 1977 and the Past President of Kernewek Lowender and Rural Youth South Australia.

As Premier he ushered in a period of sustained export growth in South Australia, when the State outstripped national growth. He pursued a vigorous program of economic reform through the corporatisation and privatisation of government services. This included the single largest public outsourcing project of its kind at the time in the world – the outsourcing of the State’s water industry. Mr Olsen implemented and oversaw the privatisation of the State’s electricity assets, a process which resulted in the reduction in State debt.

Mr Olsen also implemented an aggressive rebuilding program for South Australia. This included pursuing the construction of and contract negotiations for the Adelaide-Darwin Rail line which has recently received international acclaim as a leading private-public partnership infrastructure project. He avidly pursued and established an export industry in South Australia that continues to outstrip national trends.

Mr Olsen is a Fellow of the National Institute of Accountants. He and his wife Julie have three children and two grandchildren. His interests are barefoot water skiing, swimming and the gym.
